“As We Are” is an interactive installation located in the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, Ohio. Working alongside the designer, Matthew Mohr, DCL (Boston) engineered and produced this truly one-of-a-kind piece that integrates technology and art.
Matthew Mohr was inspired to show off the diversity of Columbus, while also creating a sense of oneness with “As We Are.”
Its structure is a 14-ft high, 24-layer rib of fabricated aluminum with custom contouring Sansi LED modules, totaling 850,000 individual LEDs. Entering the back of the head, visitors are faced with a 3-D photobooth outfitted with 32 cameras and a custom facial recognition software interface made possible by a collaboration with partners Direct Dimension (3-D scanning) and Creosphere (UX design).
The images taken are assembled into a flattened texture map, which is then sent to the exterior LED facade. Combining technology and interaction, the sculpture has been called “the ultimate selfie machine.”
