Santa’s Elevator Express has displays on its walls to give the impression it is travelling to the North Pole, while windows in Santa’s workshop show snowy animations.
A virtual elevator embedded in a 12m-tall Christmas tree is offering children and their parents the chance to ‘travel’ to the North Pole to visit Santa’s workshop.
Visitors to Santa’s Elevator Express, which is located in the Natick Mall in Massachusetts, enter a floor-level ante-room made to look like an elevator. The door closes and displays on the faux walls make it appear as if the elevator is travelling up, to the North Pole.
On ‘arriving’ at the North Pole, visitors enter a workshop with ‘windows’ displaying snowy animations, where they are greeted by Santa. They exit through the same faux elevator and undertake the digital journey in reverse.
The experience was put together by Montreal-based company Studio Artefact, which specialises in the design and creation of Christmas and holiday decor for shopping centres. It was first installed at the Bridgewater Commons in New Jersey in 2018, but moved to Massachusetts this year.
